Underground hydrogen hunt has yet to find a commercial reservoir

MIT Technology Review reports that the search for natural hydrogen in the Earth's crust has grown to involve dozens of startups worldwide, yet no commercially viable reservoir has been reported. The gas is seen as a potential source of zero-carbon fuel. Koloma, backed by Bill Gates, is prospecting in the US Midwest to reach ancient oceanic rocks associated with hydrogen production. Public data on what has been found so far remains scarce. Researchers estimate that trillions of tons of hydrogen are produced within the crust, and that recovering even a small fraction could meet global hydrogen demand for centuries.
